Notice of Funding Availability for Affordable Housing Planning Grants in CT

The Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) has received a HUD Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant that includes $118,000 for grants to municipalities to support the creation of zoning regulations for affordable housing development, or mixed use development that includes an affordable housing component.  CRCOG anticipates funding 3-4 technical assistance grants under this program.  Work funded by the grant must be completed by December 31, 2013.  The goal of the grant program is to support local development practices which advance the pr

Four new and updated regional plans for the Pioneer Valley are now available for public comment. Topics include Housing, Land Use, Environment and Sustainable Transportation.

Transit-oriented, walkable places held real estate values better

A new research paper determined that residential properties near transit stations in five major cities across the US maintained their values significantly better than properties outside of "transit sheds." Read more here.

Healthy Snacks in School - New Rules Being Considered

Healthy school food guidelines for kids proposed by USDA. New "Smart Snacks in School" proposal to ensure vending machines, snack bars include healthy choices. 39 states already put limits on sugar snacks and drinks in schools; new rule would extend this so that federally-subsidized school meals would offer children more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Food Sector Promising for New Jobs

New report from Massachusetts Workforce Alliance "Local Food, Local Jobs: Job Growth and Creation in the Pioneer Valley Food System" finds the regional food system is a promising sector for economic growth -- especially if you want to get some dirt under your finger nails! Project partners include PVPC, Communities Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA), and others.

Pioneer Valley Climate Action and Clean Energy Plan Draft Available

The draft Climate Action and Clean Energy Plan for the Pioneer Valley is now available for public review and comments. The plan includes the first greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for the region; GHG reduction scenarios and mitigation strategies; an update to the PVPC's 2008 Clean Energy Plan; detailed analysis of vulnerabilities to extreme weather, flooding and other climate-related impacts; and strategies to adapt roads, water systems and other infrastructure to better withstand these events.
